Profits are better than Wages

Jim Rohn is awesome. Here is one of his most famous sayings, and one of my favorites.

"My mentor, when I was 25 years old, dropped a phrase on me that changed my life forever when he said, "profits are better than wages. Wages will make you a living, profits can make you a fortune." You know it is a bit difficult to get rich on wages, but anybody can get rich on profits. Profits change your whole attitude, even if you start part-time. Whether it's part-time on your entrepreneurial business, network marketing company or service business.

It can be a landscape business in the summer or hanging Christmas lights in the winter. It can be training, consulting or tutoring. It can be your hobby such as painting, writing, crafts, woodworking, computers or cooking. But once you start investing even part time effort into your own business, you will find how much more exciting it is to get up in the morning and go to work on your fortune, even if you're only spending a few hours a week doing it.

How empowering it is to be able to go to work on your fortune every day rather than going to work to pay the rent. Now - it is noble to go to work to pay the rent, but if you could also parcel out part of your time - go to work to make your fortune. Your whole attitude changes; your spirit changes. It is in your voice. It is in your face. It is in your gestures. And then you can say, "I am now working full-time on my job and part-time on my fortune because I found a way to make profits." Wow! "

Your First Year in Network Marketing

I am a HUGE fan of the network marketing industry. You can start a part time business from home with very little start-up costs and because of the tax savings operate it nearly debt free in your first year. These direct sales home businesses are very simple to operate, but it is not easy. More than anything else, you must commit to continuous self development. If you join a network marketing company and stick with it, you can make good money, get more control over your time, and come out in the end just a more confident and better overall person.

If you are just getting started or thinking about getting started in network marketing, I highly recommend that you read the book Your First Year in Network Marketing. It paints a very realistic picture of what you can expect to experience if you become a network marketer. Great book.

The Go-Giver

I recently picked up an interesting little book called The Go-Giver. It is written in short story format, so it is a pretty fast read and well worth your time. It is a great book for anyone interested in network marketing.

In it, the author identifies what he calls The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success. They are of course not “laws” at all, but I find them very appealing as principles for how we should conduct ourselves in business. The five “principles” are:

1. The Principle of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.
2. The Principle of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
3. The Principle of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.
4. The Principle of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
5. The Principle of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

There is no real evidence that if we practiced these principles as a system our success would be guaranteed. There is no simple formula or recipe for success – sorry. But all of us have some set of underlying principles guiding our behavior, whether or not we have ever made the effort to identify what they are.

If you are not satisfied with how you are operating right now, and you are willing to do something about it, give these principles a try. You might not make a million bucks when you put these into practice, but I have a hard time seeing how your relationships with others would not end up more enriched.

You cannot succeed in network marketing without helping others. This book caputures that concept very well.
